What is Diptheria?
Diphtheria is a highly infectious bacterial infection that can affect the nose and throat (respiratory diphtheria), and sometimes the skin (cutaneous diphtheria). Respiratory diphtheria is spread typically by coughing and sneezing and close contact with infected people. You can also get it by sharing items, such as cups, cutlery, clothing or bedding, with an infected person.
Signs & Symptoms

A thick grey-white coating at the back of your throat

A high temperature (fever) of 38C or above

Feeling sick

Sore throat
-
Headache
-
Swollen glands in your neck

Difficulty breathing and swallowing

If it affects your skin (cutaneous diphtheria), it can cause:

Pus-filled blisters on your legs, feet and hands

Large ulcers surrounded by red, sore-looking skin

Diphtheria cases are mainly from Southeast Asia, South America, Africa and India.
Prevention

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection

Some types of diphtheria bacteria can spread from animals to humans. It is advised not to consume raw dairy products, to avoid close contact with cattle/farm animals and to follow good personal hygiene rules to minimise risk of infection.

She completed her degree at the University of Aston, and has since worked at and managed a variety of busy community pharmacies across London and Essex. She has also completed her post-graduate training and is a qualified independent prescriber.
Nisha is the clinic lead for our Travel Clinic, and she will be responsible for the prescription and delivery of all vaccinations.
